In this work, we investigate the influence of the amide solvent chemical structure on the properties of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) prepared via direct arylation polymerization (DArP). Our findings indicate that for successful polymerization the amide must possess an acyclic aliphatic structure since cyclization of an amide results in a complete shutdown of DArP reactivity as evidenced by failed polymerization in N‐methylpyrrolidone, whereas the presence of an aromatic motif renders the amide solvent susceptible to C? H activation and leads to incorporation of the solvent structure into the P3HT backbone, as demonstrated on the example of N,N‐diethylbenzamide. Additionally, we observed that the steric bulk of alkyl substituents on both the nitrogen atom and the carbonyl group within the amide structure has to be delicately balanced for optimal DArP reactivity. In the optimal cases, P3HT is obtained in high yield, with high molecular weight and contains a minimal amount of structural defects. The obtained polymer samples were comprehensively studied in terms of their chemical structure, optical, thermal and solid‐state properties in thin films using GPC analysis, 1H NMR, MALDI, UV–vis, GIXRD spectroscopy, and DSC. Simulation on the kinetic scheme of enhanced spin capturing polymerizations (ESCP) were performed to reveal the influence of different parameters, e.g., initiation rate, spin capturing and side reactions on the properties (the monomer conversion, degree of polymerization, polydispersity index, and the fraction of “living” chains) of polymer obtained. The kinetic scheme of ESCP was solved numerically as well as the method of statistical moments of molecular weight distribution was applied to get some numerical expressions for analysis. The simulations showed that fast initiation rate can lead to decrease of living fraction and broadening of molecular weight distribution. Whereas high rate of spin capturing makes the polymer chains shorter but increases living character. And side reactions always decrease livingness of the polymer obtained. Finally in the case of absence of side reaction we were able to formulate criteria for formation of polymer with target molecular weight and quota of living chains via ESCP process. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymers consisting of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and statistical poly[(acrylic acid)‐co‐(tert‐butylacrylate)] (P(AA‐cotBA)), attached to both extremities of Jeffamine® (D series based on a poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) with one amine function at each end) using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) are presented in this article. An original bifunctional amide‐based macroinitiator was first elaborated from Jeffamine®. tBA polymerization was subsequently initiated from this macroinitiator. This polymerization occurs in a well‐controlled manner leading to narrow molecular weights distribution. Amphiphilic copolymers were finally obtained after complete or partial hydrolysis of the PtBA blocks into PAA. The control of the partial hydrolysis of tBA units, conducted in a concentrated HCl/tetrahydrofuran mixture, is demonstrated. The properties of the triblock copolymers were preliminary investigated in aqueous solution by absorbance, DLS measurements and SEC/MALS/DV/DRI analysis as a function of temperature and pH modifications, providing evidences of thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive self‐assembly of the copolymers. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, biobased furan dicarboxylate polyesters have been prepared using 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and diols with high number of methylene groups (long‐chain diols), namely, 8, 9, 10, and 12. Because of the high boiling points of these diols, a modified procedure of the well‐known melt polycondensation was applied in this work. According to this, the dimethyl ester of FDCA (DMFD) reacted in the first transesterification stage with the corresponding diols forming bis‐hydroxy‐alkylene furan dicarboxylates (BHFD). In the second stage, the BHFD reacted with DMFD again at temperatures of 150–170 °C (for 4–5 h), and in the final stage, the temperature was raised to 210–230 °C (vacuum was applied for 2–3 h). The molecular weight of the polyesters and the content of oligomers, as was verified by gel permeation chromatography analysis, depend on the polycondensation time and temperature. The chemical structure of the polyesters was verified from 1H NMR spectroscopy. All the polymers were found to be semicrystalline, with melting temperatures from 69 to 140 °C depending on the diol used. In addition, the mechanical properties also varied with the type of diol. The higher values were observed for poly(octylene 2,5‐furanoate), whereas the lowest values were observed for poly(dodecylene 2,5‐furanoate) with the higher number of methylene groups in its repeating unit. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined poly(3‐alkyl‐4‐benzamide) was synthesized by means of chain‐growth condensation polymerization of phenyl 3‐octyl‐4‐(4‐octyloxybenzyl(OOB)amino)benzoate ( 1c ) from initiator 2 , followed by removal of the OOB groups on amide nitrogen of poly 1c . Polymerization of 1c with phenyl 4‐(trifluoromethyl)benzoate ( 2b ) in the presence of 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) and LiCl in THF at ?10 °C gave poly 1c with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.08) and a well‐defined molecular weight (Mn = 4480–12,700) determined by the feed ratio of monomer to initiator (from 10 to 30). The OOB groups of poly 1c were removed with H2SO4 to give the corresponding N‐unsubstituted poly(p‐benzamide) (poly 1c′ ) with low polydispersity. The solublity of poly 1c′ in polar organic solvents was dramatically higher than that of poly(p‐benzamide), demonstrating that introduction of an alkyl group on the aromatic ring is very effective for improving the solubility of poly(p‐benzamide). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic hyperbranched copolymer chains made of large hyperbranched poly(acrylic acid) cores grafted with short polystyrene stickers (HB‐PAAng‐PSn + 1) with different n values (n = 1, 10, 47) were well prepared and confirmed by size exclusion chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance. The study on the interchain association behavior of these amphiphilic chains indicates that larger HB‐(PAA)ng‐(PS)n + 1 copolymer chains have a less tendency to undergo interchain association. Moreover, the simple vial‐inversion and rheological experiments show that the apparent critical gel concentration (Cg) decreases with n, but no sol–gel transition was observed for triblock PS‐PAA‐PS even when the concentration is up to 200 g L?1. Further transmission electron microscopy study of the latex particles prepared with HB‐(PAA)ng‐(PS)n + 1 as surfactant reveals that the latex particles are spherical and narrowly dispersed; while the measured latex particle number (Np) indicates the surfactant efficiency of HB‐(PAA)47g‐(PS)48 is poorer than that of triblock PS‐PAA‐PS (n = 1). Finally, pyrene solubilization measurement shows the solubilization efficiency of HB‐(PAA)ng‐(PS)n + 1 copolymers decreases with n, consistent with the previous observed interchain association result. The present study demonstrates that both the chain topology and the styrene weight fraction dominates the final solution properties of amphiphilic HB‐(PAA)ng‐(PS)n + 1 chains in aqueous solution. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Group 4 complexes 1 – 3 [ 1 = (t‐BuOS)2Ti(O‐i‐Pr)2; 2 = (t‐BuOS)2Zr(O‐t‐Bu)2; 3 = (t‐BuOS)2Hf(O‐t‐Bu)2] supported by two phenolate bidentate ligands (t‐BuOS‐H = 4,6‐di‐tert‐butyl‐2‐phenylsulfanylphenol) promote the well‐controlled ring opening polymerization of rac‐β‐butyrolactone. In presence of isopropanol, low dispersities and molecular weights proportional to the equivalents of isopropanol are achieved. Moreover, the zirconium complex is effective in the copolymerization of rac‐β‐butyrolactone with rac‐lactide. The 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance analysis revealed that the obtained copolymers have a tapered diblock microstructure consisting of an initial block composed of lactide sequences and a terminal block composed of butyrolactone sequences. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
